Fowl Play Food

Fowl Play Food

Yesterday  (Sunday) I took the time to visit the new-ish HWKRMKT at By The River Brew co on the banks of the river Tyne, This container ship derived development is home to a brewery, a bar, a restaurant and a bike shop / cafe.
It sits proud in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge on the Gateshead site on a plot once famous for where ‘The Boat’ (aka the Tuexedo Princess nightclub boat was once moored, many people will have memories of all you can drink evenings and a revolving dance floor).
The vibe at By The River is far from that, it’s about good food, good drink and good company.

First of all I better say that the HWKRMKT is only open at certain times, at the time of publication this is currently Fridays 6pm to 11pm, Saturdays Midday to 11pm and Sundays Midday to 6pm – Please do check their website before heading out – details are at bytheriverbrew.co/hawkers-market

My visit yesterday was to sample the delights of Fowl Play Food, which if you hadn’t guess masters in chicken! Expect chicken and very amusingly named dishes (and in that light, I am going to drop as many great/awful/delete as appropriate puns in this piece) , You’re talking such examples such as ‘Twin Beaks’ and ‘Coq Blok’ – I won’t spoil the surprise, head on down yourself to see what else is on offer.  You can keep up to date via their twitter page @fowlplayfood or just wing it and head on down and see what treats you can have made fresh in front of you.

It is worth taking note that they currently operate a ‘token system’ for the food and drink at the HWKRMKT so to pay you’ll have to charge up with tokens at the token station near the market entrance before you get your claws into some scran!

I opted for a ‘Twin Beaks’ which was a tray meal (I opted for this as I am forever having burgers when I visit places so now was as good a time as any to break a habit and get stuck in)
The Twin Beaks consists of double fried chicken, buttermilk waffle with a helping of smoked chilli butter and fowl sauce.

I’l be honest I’ve never had chicken and waffles before, I’ve heard many a time about people going wild for it on TV and in movies but never myself until today.
The Chicken was golden and crispy and the taste was locked in this little golden jacket, the chicken itself was juicy and tender (by this point I was already addicted a little.. hentranced you might say) paired withe the taste of the batter and the sauces I lapped it up at some speed but enjoyed every moment of it. I certainly think that some of this food would be a match made in heaven paired with a nice juicy hoppy pale ale. If I had had the forethought I would have got myself something from the bar to compliment my meal. (note to self: try that next time)

There’s a few things on offer as well as the occasional special and I think it would be rude not to make a second visit sometime soon and find something else to tickle my taste buds from Fowl Play.
There’s bench style seating in the HWKRMKT so you can sit and enjoy or you can embrace the true street food style and get down and dirty eating it as you go.

The food is no-nonsense you get what you see, if you’re after, good messy (or as messy as you want!) feel good food, poultry in motion! To find them, pop into By The River, past the brewery bar, the bike shop and into the HWKRMKT, as you enter turn left and pass the token station and carry on just around the corner it’s one of the first units you’ll set eyes on. don’t delay, Pop in over the weekend when they’re next open, actions speak louder than birds!
